Position Summary:
As the Director of Engineering for Access Legal, you will have overall responsibility for the engineering function across all of Access Legal’s products, where your focus will be on enabling and empowering the engineering teams to deliver efficiently and to a high quality, with agility at the heart of how we operate. You have more than 8 years’ experience managing software engineering squads and can demonstrate the skills and experience needed to transfer knowledge, recruit engineering talent, ensure we have the right skills in the right teams, closely manage the squads performance, and developing team leads that can be responsible for running delivery and technical quality of the squads.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
Responsible for the management of the software development & delivery for products in the Access Legal portfolio, contributing to the achievement of growth and client satisfaction targets. Taking a holistic view to support Corporate as well as Divisional objectives.
Hands-on and understanding the details for how teams are operating to enable the right decisions to be made for how teams can work more effectively, whether this is through structural changes or different ways of working or identifying where important skills are missing.
Driving a customer-centric culture within the engineering teams, where teams are interacting directly with customers where appropriate; customer issues are responded to quickly, supporting other departments in the prompt delivery of RCAs; and customers ultimately have the sense that Access Engineering cares deeply about their needs.
Manage to the budget, owning where the investments are made within Engineering, for managing the existing teams or recruiting new skills to supplement the existing skills.
Use in-depth understanding and appreciation of agile software development best practices, customer problems, collaboration through virtualised/distributed squads and the competitive landscape along with research and metrics to inform decisions & approaches.
Structured and established approach of measuring and developing product delivery flow from squads using our own Access Engineering Agile methods to deliver; and owning the reporting out, as per Access Engineering standards, to provide clear visibility of the teams’ performance.
Adopt Access Engineering methods and drive a compelling adoption across all squads, ensuring a progressive, reliable, and efficient production capability, aligned to the divisional roadmaps and commercial goals.
Work with divisional heads to understand the company portfolio, contribute to the overall product strategy, integration, quality and cost control.
Create a one team culture across the products in the Legal Division, where there is collaboration and sharing throughout engineering and not just limited to the product the engineer may be associated with.
Responsible for the management, development, progression and operational capability of the squads, including training, appraisals, employee engagement, discipline, recruitment, retention & attrition.
Motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance through engagement initiatives.
Lead, motivate, develop and manage the performance of the squads to ensure that they have the skills and support to achieve their potential and meet the company’s needs.
Work both with functional and divisional P&E management teams to maximise the development and performance of the squads and grow to provide broader support to divisional Product Engineering needs.

Skills, knowledge, experience & qualifications:
You have previous experience in leading multiple teams of 100+ engineers, across multiple geographies, able to cross boundaries and collaboratively drive positive change up & down the chain of command.
You have excellent technical skills, with significant previous experience in writing code or in software architecture, where you are proactive in giving support and direction to teams in the decisions they make, where robust, performant, maintainable and high quality deliveries are the expected standard.
You are an excellent communicator, able to communicate at all levels and adopting a flexible & consultative approach; explaining technical concepts in a way that non-technical people can easily understand.
You have had previous experience leading in a matrix environment and can work efficiently with ambiguity in role and control.
You have the ability to think strategically whilst achieving results in own division with consideration for the wider company strategy and objectives.
You think creatively and exploit best practice, emerging technologies and fast-paced innovation, empowering teams to respond with agility and with a focus on using the right tools and technologies to deliver what the customer needs.
You have an excellent understanding of software development lifecycle, Agile methods and delivery, and able to deliver complex projects across multiple workstreams to time, budget and quality.
You have commercial experience, where tracking investments and ROI is paramount to the prioritisation and decision-making process.
You are all about the customer and how engineering serves the customer with high quality and frequent releases; being laser-focused on granular and meaningful deliveries.
You love data and can demonstrate where the decisions you’ve made are led by data. Where data is lacking for supporting decisions, you are pushing for incremental changes to improve the quality of data
You have the demonstrable ability to drive operational excellence and efficiency in scaled production environment using agile development practices, promoting best practice standards and approaches, effecting change where appropriate to achieve results.
