This role will be working within our Access TEC (Technology Enabled Care) space sitting in or Health, Support and Care division working with cutting edge apps and IoT devices helping individuals to stay independent for longer and provide insight and reassurance for family members. About you: You are a dynamic, skilled Linux based mobile app engineer with a passion for technology and a keen sense of pride in the work you do. You are a strong team player who thrives on close collaboration with your colleagues and takes shared ownership of the operations and infrastructure supporting our software solutions. You are focused on delivering high-quality, high-availability infrastructure to given timelines and are comfortable in an agile scrum environment. You are constantly seeking to improve both your own skills and the skills of others and enjoy working in a fast-paced dynamic company. You will be expected to contribute to planning sessions as well as help with the technical evolution of our products. Day-to-day, you will: Design and develop Android Kotlin applications to meet agreed acceptance criteria and stories using a range of languages and technologies Write clean, self-documenting code that is well structured, well-named, simple and easy to read Contribute to requirements discussions and requirements analysis, and take responsibility for understanding the scope, risk and complexity of changes Analyse, identify and fix root causes of defects throughout the various layers of an application Identify, compartmentalise and execute refactoring where commercially/technically necessary Implement and/or manage CI/CD Pipelines, build tooling, and environments and management/execution of Production releases Contribute towards effective source control, ensuring isolation and ability to manage multiple branches Support the team's sprint deliverables, through proactive contribution to planning, ownership of tasks, identification of dependencies and basic risk management Champion a quality-focused approach within the team, showing collaboration with the QA team As a well-rounded Software Engineer (App), your Skills and Experiences likely include: Required development skills: Java, Kotlin, Git source control CI/CD using Gradle, Azure DevOps and Firebase Device UI/Implementation testing using BrowserStack Experience with implementation and integration of BLE devices Experience with Android Security / AOSP / low level android firmware management Good understanding of IOT communication protocols. Including BLE/Bluetooth, TCP/IP, MQTT. (Desirable) Experience or a happy to learn attitude for other programming and scripting languages: e.g. Javascript (NodeJS), (Desirable) Proficient in the world of cloud platforms (preferably Azure) Understanding of event-driven solutions Open and collaborative style - able to communicate well with team members and stakeholders on deliverables and approach, demonstrating the ability to communicate and listen appropriately depending on the audience. Can provide comprehensive requirements feedback, highlighting omissions, gaps and potential areas of confusion. Writes clear & self-documenting code, organises methods and classes appropriately. Able to refactor existing code to improve readability. Good understanding of technical and commercial drivers when making decisions on refactoring. Able to follow pre-defined source control procedure, committing and merging code, dealing with conflicts. Able to perform some non-standard procedures in terms of source control. Ability to efficiently prove the source of defects and demonstrate unit tests and integration testing for eventual pathways following the proposed fix. Can use existing telemetry to identify bugs in running application. Plays an active role in sprint planning and management. Makes recommendations in planning in terms of capacity, priorities, risks or blockers. Helps drive the planning process, ensuring that everything can be 'done' within a sprint, according to the team's Definition of Done. Good understanding of QA best practice, including impact of branch/merge approach on QA, role of source code management & environment/deployment management, requirements analysis and cost of defects. Collaborative approach with QA to find defects as early as possible. Aware of trending design patterns in the technologies they work in, able to select the best design pattern for the job in hand and articulate to others why this has been chosen. Ability to denormalise data for performance and use advanced techniques whilst considering and maintaining database integrity.
